We got lots of great comments after our concert on Sunday. It was light, joyful music but still challenging to sing well. The audience could see how much we enjoyed singing and made comments such as “You made a joyful sound!” “Amazing!” “Fantastic!” The Deputy Mayor was even spotted tapping her foot to the music and she said afterwards that she would like to be invited to our next concert.
One of the ways we can tell whether a performance is going well is the instant after we’ve sung our last note of a piece. There is sometimes a glorious moment between the end of the music and the applause. It’s as if the audience is collectively catching their breath and taking in the performance. It’s variously described as a moment of joy, hush, silence, awe, anticipation, tension, electricity, or energy. Our conductor considers this moment as part of the performance itself. And there were a few times in our concert where this electric silence was maintained for what seemed like an age before being broken by a burst of applause.
